Palestinian Heritage Trail is a long-distance cultural hiking route in Palestine. The trail is about 500 km long and extends from the village of Rummana northwest of Jenin to Beit Mirsim southwest of Hebron back to Artas in Bethlehem, in addition to the newly developed Jerusalem segment that starts in Eizariya through the Old City of Jerusalem towards the villages in the Northwest (Beit Suriq to Beit Duqqo) (See map). The trail passes through more than 60 Palestinian cities, villages and local communities where travelers can experience and enjoy the authentic Palestinian Hospitality.

The Palestinian Heritage Trail is more than just a hiking trail. It is a means of meeting and making connections with local Palestinians and hikers from all over the world. You can explore Bedouin communities and experience the traditional Palestinian dishes, which is one of Palestine’s most fundamental traditions. The Palestine Heritage Trail does not only invite hikers to experience nature but also to change their perspectives by recognizing shared common values and creating friendships along the way.

DAY ONE:

Meet at the Jerusalem Hotel, 4 Anatara Ben Shaddad St., East Jerusalem, near the Damascus Gate for an early morning transfer to Nablus.

Walk to Tel Balata, site of the Bronze Age city of Shechem,

In the afternoon, transfer to Huwara, on the outskirts of Nablus, then continue walking to Awarta. The village is 8 km southeast of Nablus.

TOTAL WALKING TIME: 3 hours
DISTANCE: 10.2 km
CHALLENGE: Easy
OVERNIGHT: Local host families
 

DAY TWO:

Leave Awarta in the morning for a full day’s walk to Duma, visiting Jabal Awurma and the villages of Aqraba.

Walk through Majdal and Bani Fadil along the way.

TOTAL WALKING TIME: 5 – 7 hours
DISTANCE: 18.6 km
CHALLENGE: Moderate - Difficult
OVERNIGHT: Local host families
 

DAY THREE:

 Walk from Duma to Kufr Malek passing through the village of Mughayyar to Ain  Samia.

Finally, a steep final ascent to Kufr Malek. 

TOTAL WALKING TIME: 5 – 7 hours
DISTANCE: 14.9 km
CHALLENGE: Moderate - Difficult
OVERNIGHT: Local host families
 

DAY FOUR:

Hike from Kufr Malek to Taybeh.

 Late afternoon transfer back to Jerusalem or Bethlehem.

DAY ONE:

  • walking tour of the ancient city of Nablus
  • visit the olive oil soap factory
  • taste Nablus’ delicious ‘kanafeh’
  • walk to Tel Balata, site of the Bronze Age city of Shechem, where Abraham arrived in the Land of Canaan
  • explore the Greek Orthodox Church, which houses ancient Jacob's well
  • traditional Palestinian dinner in Awarta

DAY TWO:

  • a full day’s walk visiting Jabal Awurma and the villages around Aqraba, which is mentioned in the Bible as ‘Akrabbim’, meaning "scorpion” in Arabic. 
  •  visit the mosque which was built of ancient stones in the village center, which according to local tradition was originally a Byzantine-era church. Greek inscriptions and a cross are still visible. 

DAY THREE:

  • hike alongside the deep, rocky wadi to the natural springs of Ain Samia
  • visit the archaeological site of Ain Samia.
  • local food and evening conversation with the welcoming families of Kufr Malek
  • meet members of the local women’s union.

DAY FOUR:

  • hike along the edge of the high plateau with spectacular views of the Great Rift Valley,
  • visit the historic village of Taybeh, a mainly Christian town
  • tour Palestine’s only brewery.
  • visit the ruins of the 4th century Greek Orthodox ancient church of St. George.
